Bedside Ultrasound Becomes a Reality

Clinicians have often referred to ultrasound technology as the "stethoscope of the future," predicting that as the equipment shrinks in size, it will one day be as common at the bedside as that trusty tool around every physician's neck. According to a new report in The New England Journal of Medicine, that day has arrived.

Lessening the Dangers of Radiation: Ultrasound as Effective as CT Scans for Most Diagnoses

For diagnosing head and neck ailments, tests that use radiation are always less desirable than those that don't. Otolaryngologists have a wide range of techniques available to them, including CT or "CAT" scans, MRI and ultrasound. CT uses significant radiation and MRI a lower amount, but ultrasound is a non-invasive, non-radiating technique. It does not require injection of radioactive contrast material and has no side effects.

Mini ECG gets heart attack rehab patients mobile

Dr Charles Worringham of Queensland University of Technology's Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation said the unique 'Cardiomobile' monitoring system, developed by Gold Coast company Alive Technologies, was being further developed and trialled together with QUT under an ARC Linkage Grant. "The program allows people who have been in hospital for a heart attack or heart surgery to undergo a six-week walking exercise rehabilitation program wherever it's convenient, while having their heart signal, location and speed monitored in real time," Dr Worringham said.

The innovation is a low-power interface that transmits signals from a wireless ECG (electrocardiogram or heart monitoring)-sensor system to an android mobile phone.

The Smallest Ultrasound Developed for Pain Relief

Washington, Feb 18 2010: A biomedical engineering graduate student at Cornell University has created a miniature ultrasound device that could one day introduce a whole new level of home therapy for arthritis, injury and other painful ailments. The innovative ultrasound device, which can be easily fit in one's pocket, may soon be used to relieve pain, cure injures or arthritis just at the comfort of your home.
